Frequenty Asked Questions

What is a string quartet?
A string quartet is an ensemble of four instruments--two violins, a viola (a slightly larger, deeper sounding version of a violin) and a cello. Composers such as Beethoven, Mozart and Brahms have been writing music for this combination of instruments for over 200 years. For weddings, Pachelbel's "Canon" and "The Water Music Suite" by Handel sound wonderful played by a string quartet, as does the music of Bach and Mendelssohn and Wagner.

Which ensemble should I choose?
*String Quartet: Two violins, viola, and cello perform in a wide variety of musical styles. This group is the most effective and versatile, with an extensive repertoire, and full vibrant sound.
*String Quintet: adding a double bass to the quartet increases the volume by deepening the base and gives the feeling of a small orchestra-excellent for the largest parties.
*String Trio: Two violins and cello or violin, viola and cello. This group is very popular, especially for smaller weddings. Not quite as loud as the quartet, but has an extensive repertoire and is better suited for a modest budget and limited space.
*String Duo: Two violins or violin and cello. This is very intimate ensemble, which can create a beautiful atmosphere, but has a limited volume. Excellent for smaller events and spaces
Adding a trumpet, vocalist or a flute to a string ensemble can produce a beautiful effect.

Can you give us more information on wedding performances?
Weddings are considered to be one hour events with soft, prelude music beginning prior to the wedding, and recessional music as guests are departing. We are happy to also play music during the wedding ceremony, as well. If the ceremony will be longer than one hour, we usually shorten our prelude and postlude music. If the ceremony is longer than an hour, additional fees may apply.

What if my wedding starts late?
It is completely understandable if a wedding is running a little late. We are happy to continue playing the prelude music up to an additional 10 minutes after the original start time which has generally been the amount of time needed to get back on schedule.

If we happen to have an additional event scheduled later that day, we cannot stay longer than the time agreed upon and written in our contract due to our obligation to other clients. We will let you and/or your wedding coordinator know of our obligation before your event.

Does your quartet also play at the reception?
Yes, we can certainly play at the reception either immediately after an event as well as another location.

Does your quartet also come to rehearsals?
Yes, We are more than happy to attend rehearsals. Additional fees will apply for the extra time incurred.

How can we secure your quartet to perform for our event?
A non-refundable deposit of $100 will hold the quartet for your event. Full payment is due two (2) weeks prior to event. Please fill out the "Personal Consultation Request" form on this Web page and someone will contact you as soon as possible.

Do you have any suggestions for music?
We would be more than happy to suggest music for your event. Many of our clients begin by taking a look at our list of music on our "Music Worksheet" page. We are more than happy to provide suggestions to help you create your ideal wedding or event.

Can your musicians perform with, or accompany, other musicians such as a pianist or singer?
Yes. We have performed with many different ensembles over the years and have a broad experience with different types of musicians. A rehearsal can be scheduled just prior to the ceremony or we can schedule a different time for an additional fee.

Can your quartet perform non-standard repertoire or unusual arrangements?
Yes. Please speak with our music coordinator before a contract is signed so that we can accommodate your special music requests. If the music is not in our library but is available for string instruments we can obtain the music and prepare it for your event. Occasionally, we have also transcribed popular music for our ensemble upon request. There will be an additional fee for obtaining non-standard music.

Does your group perform outside?
While an outdoor wedding or event can be very beautiful, we do ask for an alternative venue in the case of inclement weather. Instruments must be protected from sun, heat, moisture, hot and cold temperatures.

What equipment does your group need during your service?
Our quartet needs 4 comfortable chairs without arms when playing. We provide our own music stands and music.

Do we need to provide food for the musicians?
We ask you to provide food if the musicians play at your event for four hours or more or if a long distance is traveled.

Do we need to tip the musicians?
Feel free to tip the musicians if you so choose.

What To Expect:

From classics to familiar favorites, the right music can make a wedding memorable. And nothing creates a mood like the beautiful sound of a violin. Add another violin, a viola, and the rich bass of a cello, and you have a string quartet.

  • Our quartet's repertoire includes classics which are perfectly suited for formal ceremonies, as well as music from movies, musicals, and the like for receptions.
  • Even fiddle and gypsy music is not beyond the scope of our soloists when we stroll from table-to-table during the dinner.
  • Our customers have been delighted with our performance. Our business is firmly built on referrals. We've played for three brides from the same family over the past few years.
  • For the ceremony we play a thirty-minute prelude before the actual wedding begins, as the guests are arriving, music for the seating of the mothers, and the bridal processional. During the ceremony, we perform selections of music that are discussed with the customers in advance.
  • Often a harp, a trumpet or a vocalist have augmented the ensemble.
